Sorry it's been a long while.
I'm trying to get back in control of my schedule and life. Maybe I never was...
In any case...I've been DJing a fair amount, and having a blast when I do. A crew was formed between the DJs who play house parties and some club stuff around campus - we're called The Foundation. It's on FB. It's super exciting...we're a crew - it feels really cool and powerful, and is definitely the direction I want to go with any DJing I do. It's a community thing for me, and this fulfills that in some way.
Also, I'm super pumped for you, Matt. It sounds like you have a lot of opportunities coming up, and I think that's so great! I'm sad I won't be there to see your growth into more public DJing.
Cos - Great job on the album! I've been listening regularly, and as I've said already: I really like it. I appreciate that you've shared it with us.
Stu, I'm glad you're groovin to our music, and I hope your studies and non-studies are going well. As I said, something's on the way. I'll keep you updated. Things are a bit crazy until this weekend passes, with the party and costume-making and all.
I'll make sure you guys see the costume.
In any case, I've been mostly getting dance music, as you could imagine. So, that's what I'm gonna add to the folder now!
1. The Juan MacLean - Happy House
I would love to say "I can't believe I didn't heard about this until a year after it came out," but I can believe it. It happens all the time. It's not even like I slept on it. I just didn't know it existed. How sad is that? Well, at least I have the happiness it brings now. I discovered the joy it could bring in some beautiful fall weather when I was in the midst of maddddd crushing on someone.
Also - this is not the full version. That's 12 minutes. I couldn't find a full 320 version. But I got the 12". It's that good for me. Also, notice the switchup toward the end. It gets so spacey and percussioney. It's fucking brillliant!
2. Weekend Express - The Afterparty
Holy fuck! This song is fucking crazy!!!! The one in the dropbox is really quiet, which is unfortunate. I'm probably gonna buy this ep cos the other two tracks are alright, but I just need it. Stillove4Music is just dope. They always have great Chi soundin stuff. Just let it take you away....
When I first heard it, I thought it couldn't get much better, at a minute and a half in...but then the bassline hit and I was just like....WUTTTTT???? So, enjoy. haha
3. Tensnake - In the End (I Want You To Cry)
I heard this on a Tensnake mix on his Soundcloud. I generally like his stuff, and this has a dope deep house feel. I also like the bassline and that weird little keyboard-ey sound that comes in. It's strange...but it works somehow. Also...did I drop his "Something About You?" If not, I'll do that, too....it drops and it's just such a dope jacking house beat. I've been getting good results with that at parties here.
4. Mark Morrison - Return of the Mack (Dave Edwards Mix)
This is my cheezy gimmicky song of the week! I found it and I was like "THIS IS GOING TO BE AWFUL." I don't think I'm wrong, necessarily. But you can't deny what some probably-LA-dwelling-beach/pool-party-going white kid can do to this song. There's something about it.
5. Keljet & Falcon Punch - Saturday Night
First - the original, Oliver Cheatham's "(Get Down) Saturday Night," is one of my favorite boogie songs. Second - Daft Punk sampled said song for "Voyager" on the Discovery album (one of my fav. songs of theirs). Third - this is an interesting take, with more contemporary electronic sounds than the original - so it has that going for it. But it's not super interesting and leaves out some of the best vocals from the original:
6. Moon Boots - Off My Mind
Matt knows how good Moon Boots can be. I played this right after the above track at the last party and it turned out really well. Dope shit! It's kinda cheezy, I guess, but I'm ok with that. I love the vocals - so simple, so effective at keeping people into it (anyone know what they're from?).
7. Carte Blanche - Jack on the Moon
I bought their White Man on the Moon EP last week. It's good shit. I also was like...fuck, Mehdi's dead. WTF? So, I've been peeping his shit recently. This track's got a good sample from an early house track I can't remember the name of...but is very obvious.... But anyway - good dance materialz.
8 & 9 - Two tracks from MAM.
Not sure who or what MAM is/are. But, I bought an EP that had these two tracks on it. Wolf + Lamb edits. It's some dope shit. One would fit right in with some Chromeo and Dam-Funk. The other I heard in a Tiger + Woods mix, I believe, and thought was OK at first....then I realized it was pretty awesome. Filler, but still pretty cool.
Anyway, I need to get to sleep so I can have a good day and night tomorrow. I still need to prepare for the set...I want to make it fun and Halloweeny, but I'm not sure how. I guess I'll have to get creative!
Hope you're all doing well and you have safe, mostly-responsible times this weekend.
Talk to you soon! And next time, it won't be so long. I've been working every day of the week for a little while and it's about to end. Let's hope that actually helps me do things I want, like keep in touch with you and others. In any case, keep holdin it down in your areas for good music, and I hope you enjoy what I've added.
