Great music Matt. Well played. Cole Medina did a few MJ remixes on the American Standard label. He also did this killer Bee Gees edit 5 years back or so:
I heard it on a Nicky Siano mix and spent the next 30 minutes trying to find it. Something powerful for sure.
The song from La Jetee was great. What a fantastic movie. I watched 12 Monkeys before it and really appreciated the stop frame approach more because of it.
Keep you're head up. Don't spend your time combating what you think society is pressuring you to be or resisting change; just find the right people and start creating whatever you can. Reorient yourself so that you're setting your own goals and accomplishing them. You will inevitably change (which is healthy), so it's better to be the one controlling the process instead of letting the frustration with society direct your energies. Also volunteering helps. Find a soup kitchen or equivalent, and get yourself out among people doing something productive.
I've gotta get back to the books. I'll post more music next time I come up for air.
It has been a long time since I last posted. Seasonal depression is getting the better part of my emotions, this has complicated my interest in DJing, art, and seeking out new friendships. I have been struggling lately trying to see what direction my life needs to head. It's a complicated question with no clear answer. No one tells us what to do, and society provides only an image that to be a good person we must be NUMBER 1. That is a lot of pressure and pushes only the ego onward. That being said, all is not lost. A meditation I've been doing is to remind myself that: "I am ok just as I am. There is no need to change who I am." In other updates I currently am working towards moving to Boulder, CO. The plan is to be there by November 1st of 2012. I look forward to snowboarding a lot, mountain biking, and further developing my meditation practice. I've also heard that the music scene is really great there for electronic music! It would be really cool to find a supportive community. You all will have a place to stay out there once I am settled down.
OH MY GORSH!!! THA MEWZORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i!i!!!!11
Received an email this morning from the DJ Shadow mailing list. Apparently he is releasing a bunch of vault material he produced on the MPC from 1992-96! Will come out in the following months.
Clark is next with some acoustic eclectronica. It is very reminiscent of some Black Moth Super Rainbow with higher production quality. More mellow and has a nice ambient, moody outro.
You guys have probably listened to Wham! before. No further introduction needed, George Michael kills it on "Everything She Wants". Nuff said.
Following in the dance music direction, Cole Medina is the shit. His production has such a great 90's sampled-vinyl aesthetic to it, created by great use of layering low-pass/mid-pass filtered samples with fat, thick drums. These tracks are great for warming the place up and also bringing the house down in the heat of the night!
Young Prisms is a very obscure band with no easy way to acquire their music. Much google searching MAY get you something....maybe. You're more likely to come across a crappy remix... Anyways, the track "Feel Fine" has such a great psychedelic, shoe-gaze vibe to it. If I were ever in a rock band, I'd hope we could make something nearly as great as this. Has a My Bloody Valentine meets The Pixies vibe to it.
Eddie Murphy - "Party All the Time" (in all of its 320kbps glory! YESS!!!)
Gay Cat Park - "I'm A Vocoder" (lolz! It's great by the way, exceptionally obscure, weird, cheesy, and finally fun:)
Wojciech Kilar - "Love Remembered" This song is featured in the 1992 film Dracula. Different versions are played throughout the film... luckily when Keanu Reeves is not on screen. (WHEW!) This song is also sampled by DJ Cam for his song "Free Your Turntable and Your Scratch Will Follow" on the fantastic 1995 album Underground Vibes.
Ghosthustler - "Busy Busy Busy (Prince Klassen Young Professional re-edit)" Ghosthustler is a (now disbanded) side project by Neon Indian. He also goes by the moniker Vega(worth checking out too). This one took a long time to find (NOT in 128kbps.. Come on people! Care about the quality of your music for fucks sake!) This version is almost identical to the original, possibly a tiny bit longer.
Almost done, going through the "Recently Added" section in itunes picking out the best tracks.
Tropic of Cancer - "A Color" Again going into the shoe-gaze realm. This time with more of a Goth/Industrial vibe, somewhat New Orderish. This will rock a dancefloor to sleep...unless you're playing to a room full of hipsters that consider themselves too cool to read pitchfork... wait a sec! Pitchfork kinda sucks!
Gigamesh - "Rock & Roll (Gigamesh Edit)" Honestly one of the best classic rock re-works I've ever heard. Gigamesh is a Minneapolis-based producer. He did one of the most popular remixes of Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks". (I'm also featured in one of his music videos doing a sweet dance move!) This song is awesome because it always works 9 out of every 10 times! Pretty good odds, huh?
This last one goes out with both of you guys in mind.
Hilltop Hoods - "Now You're Gone (Muffin Remix)" Oh my GOD! That filtered slap-bass! baby you're so good don't stop coming with the funk. you know I need you so bad.
Miss seeing you guys. Take care of yourselves, enjoy the music, and may your lives be filled with joy.
Last first semester law school exam is tomorrow. I've been studying like crazy for the past week and a half and things have gone pretty well so far I think. I just purchased a few records off of discogs and thought I'd share:
That was the sound of me coming up for air. Just finished the first law school exam ever this morning. What an experience. To celebrate I wanted to post a couple videos that I've been digging on since I got out of the exam and started searching for music again.
I love exploding out of a test, walking down a busy street, and jamming to some funky drums and keys. I hope everything is going well with you guys!!!!
If you guys want a dope mix to peep while you're studying, at the gym, doing whatever, peep Julio Bashmore's Essential Mix for BBC's Radio 1.
You can easily find a download link...why, here's one that may work: http://mixing.dj/2011/livesets/julio-bashmore-essential-mix-sat-09-24-2011-talion/
I couldn't find any streaming...but here's a rip of one of my fav. tracks to be found on it:
too bad there's no release of it...yet (fingers crossed)
I'm trying to get back in control of my schedule and life. Maybe I never was...
In any case...I've been DJing a fair amount, and having a blast when I do. A crew was formed between the DJs who play house parties and some club stuff around campus - we're called The Foundation. It's on FB. It's super exciting...we're a crew - it feels really cool and powerful, and is definitely the direction I want to go with any DJing I do. It's a community thing for me, and this fulfills that in some way.
Also, I'm super pumped for you, Matt. It sounds like you have a lot of opportunities coming up, and I think that's so great! I'm sad I won't be there to see your growth into more public DJing.
Cos - Great job on the album! I've been listening regularly, and as I've said already: I really like it. I appreciate that you've shared it with us.
Stu, I'm glad you're groovin to our music, and I hope your studies and non-studies are going well. As I said, something's on the way. I'll keep you updated. Things are a bit crazy until this weekend passes, with the party and costume-making and all.
I'll make sure you guys see the costume.
In any case, I've been mostly getting dance music, as you could imagine. So, that's what I'm gonna add to the folder now!
1. The Juan MacLean - Happy House
I would love to say "I can't believe I didn't heard about this until a year after it came out," but I can believe it. It happens all the time. It's not even like I slept on it. I just didn't know it existed. How sad is that? Well, at least I have the happiness it brings now. I discovered the joy it could bring in some beautiful fall weather when I was in the midst of maddddd crushing on someone.
Also - this is not the full version. That's 12 minutes. I couldn't find a full 320 version. But I got the 12". It's that good for me. Also, notice the switchup toward the end. It gets so spacey and percussioney. It's fucking brillliant!
2. Weekend Express - The Afterparty
Holy fuck! This song is fucking crazy!!!! The one in the dropbox is really quiet, which is unfortunate. I'm probably gonna buy this ep cos the other two tracks are alright, but I just need it. Stillove4Music is just dope. They always have great Chi soundin stuff. Just let it take you away....
When I first heard it, I thought it couldn't get much better, at a minute and a half in...but then the bassline hit and I was just like....WUTTTTT???? So, enjoy. haha
3. Tensnake - In the End (I Want You To Cry)
I heard this on a Tensnake mix on his Soundcloud. I generally like his stuff, and this has a dope deep house feel. I also like the bassline and that weird little keyboard-ey sound that comes in. It's strange...but it works somehow. Also...did I drop his "Something About You?" If not, I'll do that, too....it drops and it's just such a dope jacking house beat. I've been getting good results with that at parties here.
4. Mark Morrison - Return of the Mack (Dave Edwards Mix)
This is my cheezy gimmicky song of the week! I found it and I was like "THIS IS GOING TO BE AWFUL." I don't think I'm wrong, necessarily. But you can't deny what some probably-LA-dwelling-beach/pool-party-going white kid can do to this song. There's something about it.
5. Keljet & Falcon Punch - Saturday Night
First - the original, Oliver Cheatham's "(Get Down) Saturday Night," is one of my favorite boogie songs. Second - Daft Punk sampled said song for "Voyager" on the Discovery album (one of my fav. songs of theirs). Third - this is an interesting take, with more contemporary electronic sounds than the original - so it has that going for it. But it's not super interesting and leaves out some of the best vocals from the original:
6. Moon Boots - Off My Mind
Matt knows how good Moon Boots can be. I played this right after the above track at the last party and it turned out really well. Dope shit! It's kinda cheezy, I guess, but I'm ok with that. I love the vocals - so simple, so effective at keeping people into it (anyone know what they're from?).
7. Carte Blanche - Jack on the Moon
I bought their White Man on the Moon EP last week. It's good shit. I also was like...fuck, Mehdi's dead. WTF? So, I've been peeping his shit recently. This track's got a good sample from an early house track I can't remember the name of...but is very obvious.... But anyway - good dance materialz.
8 & 9 - Two tracks from MAM.
Not sure who or what MAM is/are. But, I bought an EP that had these two tracks on it. Wolf + Lamb edits. It's some dope shit. One would fit right in with some Chromeo and Dam-Funk. The other I heard in a Tiger + Woods mix, I believe, and thought was OK at first....then I realized it was pretty awesome. Filler, but still pretty cool.
Anyway, I need to get to sleep so I can have a good day and night tomorrow. I still need to prepare for the set...I want to make it fun and Halloweeny, but I'm not sure how. I guess I'll have to get creative!
Hope you're all doing well and you have safe, mostly-responsible times this weekend.
Talk to you soon! And next time, it won't be so long. I've been working every day of the week for a little while and it's about to end. Let's hope that actually helps me do things I want, like keep in touch with you and others. In any case, keep holdin it down in your areas for good music, and I hope you enjoy what I've added.
